I have been having trouble with the Trojan Horse Clicker.AALX.  I have tried to use HijackThis but it is too confusing for me and I do not know what to delete.  How do I remove this program or file.  Please help!

First off, I’m glad you did not start clicking random things in HijackThis and delete random things; I can’t tell you what a nightmare that is to bring back those old files (most of the entries that pop up are good!).

The Trojan Horse Clicker.AALX is not a major security thread but it is an annoyance as it will bring pop-ups and change your web browser and default page settings especially on Internet Explorer.

The Trojan Horse Clicker.AALX actually needs some modification in our usual steps to get rid of it, but we’ll be able to remove it quickly.

To remove this program, we’re going to use Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

The trick here is to change the name of the download file to something arbitrary name such as myfavoritetoy.exe or similar to fool the Trojan.  Follow the instructions:

  • Download and double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select “Perform Quick Scan”, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. (You may need this for a later post on the forums!)

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately

Infections are getting smarter and can corrupt other types of measures to remove them.  Renaming the download file will help save your PC!
