I’ve been getting a good deal of emails about people complaining about the speed of their complain about the speed of there new computers and how it got ?so slow so fast!? Its rare how few of people realize the importance of maintenance on a computer is as equal as the maintenance of your car. You wouldn?t leave the brand new Lexus out to sit and bake with the same oil for 50,000 miles! The same rules apply to your computer! Do yourself AND the computer a favor and follow some of these tips:
One of the most common problems I see is most users wait 5 minutes for the computer to be ready to use after they start it up. Some of my friends use to boot up their machines, take a shower, and come back and still wait for some of the programs to finish loading?.GET RID OF SOME! You do NOT need all these programs starting during the boot of your memory, they just hog memory and slow down your CPU. Remove the ones you don?t want…
1) Go to Start > Run and type msconfig in the text box . This brings up the System Configuration Utility.
2) Remove the programs you do not need to startup during the boot sequence (gaming login’s, messanger program, audio players)
(do NOT uncheck something if you do not know what it does- chances are then you might NEED it there if you dont know what its for- these are all recognizable programs?Google the ones you don?t know to be sure)
3) Reboot and Enjoy.

Next- learn to clean out temporary stored internet files and clear the cache. There are some great programs out there such as CCleaner and other, but my favorite has easily been ATF Cleaner This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE:If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
^These couple tips should help you see a greater improvement on your systems preformance?use these tools to help monitor and control your compter?s garbage from time to time!
Remember…99% of the problems sit in front of the monitor 😉

1A nifty little tool i find very useful, is StartupLite. It recognizes all windows components and leaves only those programs not needed for windows to start. Ready for you to decide which to keep or not. Most security programs won’t be shown either. Its an portable application, so no install needed.
You can get the tool at http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php

3Great post! Worked wonderfully…I’m glad I didn’t touch some of those other startups with all those names- I think those were windows startup files!

4I use Start-up Inspector [http://www.windowsstartup.com/startupinspector.php] and Start-up List Index [http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html] to manage the start up programs on my XP computer.
Nice article. Will give ATF and StartUpLite a go.

5When I go to Start –> Run and type in msconfig, the computer can’t find it. Could that be the source of my problems with my email (AOL freezing up on me, both the installed version and the webmail)? I was out of town for 3 months and God only knows what my kids did to my computer while I was gone.

7dont use programs to control your startup, although they can be good you dont need them as msconfig still does the job, and other features, check out the website http://www.instructables.com and type in computer slow or speed up my vista etc. it will tell u alot of ways in you can speed up your computer without the need to download/buy programs to do it. nad if you cannot find msconfig try looking in your system32 folder

9Hi, guys. I got same problem with you. I bought my Dell inspiron last Christmas. It worked sharp at the first few months, but got slow after that. It took about 15 mins to start up. I can even walk away and brew my coffee during waiting! I even thought about reinstall my computer! My friend recommended the software tuneup360 and Norton systemwork. I tried both. Norton did look really powerful and could do lots of thing, but it was too difficult for me and too expensive, while Tuneup360 is my type. I just need to click one big “fix now” button and get my computer fixed. Now my computer takes only 30 sec to start up.
