I have a Generic!Artemis virus and my McAfee protection doesn’t completely remove it…how can I remove it?? Is it dangerous? I just want to get it off my computer!!! Please help!
The Generic!Artemis virus is a relatively new virus (reported August of 2008) and has been assessed to be a “low” threat virus.? Nonetheless the Generic!Artemis virus is still a virus and should be removed from any machine.? Not so surprisingly, the big commercial anti-virus of McAfee is unable to remove the Generic!Artemis virus, yet another free and useful tool can.? Try this common fix to remove it from your computer immediately!
As always, we’re going to use our trusty tool of Malwarebytes ‘ Anti-Malware!
Please download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
Those simple steps should take care of your infection!

1I have tried this fix and nothing happens. Malwarebytes simply bytes!
I also have gone to tech support at McAfee twice and their answer was to go to tech support, with no positive suggestions at all. I bought a 3 computer license and am reluctant to use Mcafee on the other two, as it seems to identify, but is unable to fix.

4McAfee Removal for Artemis Trojan:
“Artemis” & Other Possibly False Detections
——————————————————————————–
Artemis is the new “Active Protection” component of Security Center.
It works by adding an extra heuristic layer to the detection engine, but instead of just detecting something it actually “calls home” to the virus database to double-check before labelling something as a possible threat.
You should go to the Restore tab in Security Center and make sure that it is forwarded to the Threat Center (Avert Laboratories) as, if it is harmless, it will then be excluded from the database automatically.
To send it to the Threat Center outside of Security Center…..
First disable VirusScan:
To temporarily turn off VirusScan do the following:
Double-click the taskbar icon to open Security Center
Click Advanced Menu (bottom left)
Click Configure (left)
Click Computer & Files (top left)
You can disable VirusScan in the right-hand module and tell it for how long.
Then click the Restore button (left & assuming it was quarantined) & restore the item.
Send the file to Avert for analysis:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/submit-sample.aspx
or
https://www.webimmune.net/default.asp
or
Email file to: virus_research@avertlabs.com
When submitting samples via E-mail all samples must be packaged in a .ZIP file. When creating this .ZIP file, it is important to understand that the .ZIP can be no more than 3 megabytes in size and can contain no more than 30 files. Additionally, any .ZIP file created must be password-protected using the password “infected” (minus the “”). Failure to follow these guidelines will cause your submission to be rejected.
To be on the safe side scan with an outside anti-spyware agent such as SuperAntispyware (Free) or Malwarebytes (Free). Let them clean everything they find.
See this FAQ regarding Artemis.
It comes with and is configurable on Security Center 9.3 (the latest 2009 version) but it can be installed as an extra on the following McAfee versions:
* 2008 McAfee? VirusScan Plus? / McAfee? Internet Security Suite / McAfee? Total Protection (SC v8.x)
* 2009 McAfee? VirusScan Plus? / McAfee? Internet Security / McAfee? Total Protection (SC v.9.0)
But it will NOT be configurable. The only way to turn it off is to uninstall it from Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs (XP), Programs/Uninstall a Program (Vista), where it will be listed separately.
See: http://us.mcafee.com/en-us/landingpa…protection.asp
To configure it on SC9.3, double-click the taskbar icon to open Security Center
Click Advanced Menu (bottom left)
Click Configure (left)
Click Computer & Files (top left)
Click Advanced (right)
Select Active Protection (left)
You can turn it off at the right.

5Yes, he is right. Artemis is not configurable on MacAfee. Also, it corrupted my Virusscan files, I suspect. I got error messages about scripting, damaged files, and missing components. After having the slow problems that Julius spoke of above, my MacAfee wasn’t working. I had to work with my internet company and Macafee to uninstall and reinstall the whole MacAfee program then Artemis popped up in one of my first scans, I deleted it, it showed up again and I deleted it once again. Nasty virus!

6This is the only thing that got rid of Artemis for me. McAfee wanted ?60 and this program did it for free! Thank you!

7I have the Artemis virus. I know absolutely nothing about the inner workings of computers. I tried to use a McAfee scan…all it did was quarantine it, but I couldn’t get rid of it. I tried to do a clean-up and now I can’t log in at all. It starts to log me in and then immediately logs me out, so I’m not able to try any of the above solutions. What do I do now?

8I used HiJackThis to remove it. I ran a scan with HiJackThis and found a string that looked like this,
02 – BHO: (no name) – {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}-(no name)
I told HiJackThis to fix it then I ran two new scans with Mcfee and it seems to be gone.

11So I was downloading music and playing games (Probably the most common practice for many) when, as if out of nowhere, I receive several *Illegitimate* pop ups pretending to be common programs I use on my computer. I knew they were fishy so I didn’t click ’em at all and restarted my comp with high hopes. After the reboot I thought a full scan from McAfee was necessary… 19 detected & quarantined items later I thought ~80 <Install>QuickScan>ETA 6min>Results>Remove>Reboot… and my boo boo was all better ~8) I know this post is a chapter book ~XP but I just wanna give BIG THANKS ‘n I also wanted to add that if this doesn’t work for you than it’s most likely a user related issue… kinda like driving in the snow =)

12I was downoading a show (The Gruffalo) – yeah, I know, not good idea, anyways, the file was disguised as a quicktime file I was tempted to open it but had it scan first thinking if it was a virus in disguise I’d be able to pick it up. 2 scans later, nothing so thought it was safe, then it said it needed a file to open it and had the explorer open, I closed that and closed quicktime because the movie file couldn’t open, next thing, my windows explorer started to act up. I couldn’t work anything and when I tried to restart the system it wouldn’t start windows up properly, I knew I had a virus or 2 in there so did a safe mode startup and searched for a solution online. Best solution for me was to do a system restore then try to fix it…oh, my McAfee stopped working properly too.
After the system restore, windows worked and I had to fix McAfee and I rescan the system and found the dreaded Artemis Virus…nasty and harmful! Definitely!
