Right. Let’s get started then.

The first thing Hemal did when he got his Macbook Pro was to start installing basic programs that he normally uses such as web browsers, IM clients, etc.? At first he was a little confused on how to do this because installing applications in OS X is different from in Windows.

In windows there is usually a setup file ending in “.exe” which is like a mini-program that starts installing and setting up the main program.? Normally double clicking the setup.exe file will allow program to begin its installation once it knows where to install itself.? In OS X, many actions are based on Drag-and-drop because it is simple and intuitive.? If you want to install a program typically you would download the program and just drag it into the applications folder.? For the more visual learners out there, here is a step-by-step visual guide on how to install applications and programs in Mac OS X:

Here we’re going to try and install firefox.? When you go to the firefox download site and download the Mac version of firefox, you’ll find a .dmg file in your Downloads folder.? Here it is on my desktop

1-1

A .dmg file stands for a Disk Image file.? It acts as if a disk thumb drive is inserted into your computer and the application is copied off of that.? Double click on the .dmg file and it should appear as a new drive on your computer

1-2

When you double click on it a new window should also pop up, if not just click on the disk image.

Now just drag and drop the Firefox icon into the Applications folder. Firefox was kind enough to already provide a shortcut to the Applications folder so you can do everything in this window here.? Otherwise, you can just open a new finder window and drag it into the folder there.

On occasion, when you open the disk image you will find a .pkg file.? These are called installers and they are generally used for larger, more complex programs like Flash or Itunes:

In these circumstances, just double-click on the .pkg? file and the application will begin installing much like in Windows.

Well there you have it! Simple right? Stay tuned for more tips and hints.
